Big Tex loves free concerts
October 7, 2008
Concerts will be held throughout the duration of the Texas State Fair on the Chevrolet Main Stage, so if you’re a country fan you’ll be happy to know admission to these concerts is free with your State Fair ticket purchase. This weekend after the OU game, Amarillo native and Texas Country wild man Kevin Fowler will be performing at 8:30.
General Admission tickets are $14 so think of it as a cheap concert ticket, because you’ll still have to buy tickets for food and rides once in the fair. But events such as the auto show, pig races, Total Digital Home, a techno-light show you probably shouldn’t bring grandma to, the BMX bike show and the L’oreal exhibit. Oh, and my personal favorite–butter sculptures. This year we will finally see the “long-anticipated” 800-pound King Tut masterpiece.
And if you’re too poor or unlucky to get an OU ticket, you can watch the game on TV screens throughout the park or just listen to the yells and cries from the nearly dilapidated Cotton Bowl.
[He's really crying because he missed the pig races.]
Free food, music and democracy
October 6, 2008
Tonight from 7 to 10 pm on the Gregory Gym Plaza, there will be free food, live music and most importantly, voter registration, in a race before the deadline at midnight.
[One of Shepard Fairey's posters, you may have seen the Obama print around]
If you’re too good for free food and music, you can register at tables located across campus from 10 am to 4 pm. The tables will be hosted by different organizations, because Udems, College Republicans, The Daily Texan, Student Government and the Student Events Center are working together for the non-partisan event.
And again, if you’re registered in a different county and don’t want to visit home to vote, you can change your voter registration to Travis county with the same form as new registration.
Burnt Orange Report has made a handy dandy place of voter registration map for the many local businesses staying open late for the deadline.
If you haven’t already, please register to vote. Some people argue that there’s so much more you can do in the way of civil participation and they don’t bother with voting but it’s the easiest form of participation in our government, just like recycling is the easiest way to better the environment. Do it!
Bingo!

Another fun game to play during debate time: Palin Bingo! Fun for the whole family, especially the hockey moms.
Tweet on TV
October 2, 2008
This is a fun site while watching the debate, it combines twitter and current TV, a web site still in beta. If you begin your twitter with #current, your “tweets” appear over the video. Pretty neat to watch as well.
Entertain your skull
October 2, 2008
If you were hiding in cave or say, a tomb during the summer, you may have missed the fourth installment of Indiana Jones: The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, or other summer blockbusters. Luckily for UT students, the Texas Union provides free chances (with student ID) to view these films every Thursday in their movie theater. Tonight the Crystal Skull will be shown at 6 and 9 pm. Check out their full schedule and other Union events here.
