Hanging with Cooper

June 16, 2008

This video has terrible sound quality because it’s from my phone, but this is just a look at what it’s like at Hill’s Cafe, see entry below. Johnny Cooper surprised me, I didn’t think the set would be too good because I’d never really heard of him, but he’s full of energy and has a great voice.

Check out a better video of Cooper by someone else who was at Hill’s.

We listened to the music while waiting for a seat in the restaurant, which was alright. I’m sure it’s different on non music series nights, but the hostess calls your cell phone when a table is ready (because the music’s so loud) and no waiter showed us to our table, we were just told to sit in the front. So we picked the nice Willie Nelson booth, next to Cory Morrow and Kevin Fowler booths and ordered. The rolls and cornbread with jalapeno butter are probably the food most worth going to the restaurant for, but their burgers and chili were great too. We ate at the restaurant because we were hungry and the outdoor concert (drinking and standing for most people) wasn’t really my friends’ scene.

All in all it was a fun experience and I also want to check out Blues on the Green, a different free music series happening every other Wednesday in Zilker Park.

Hills for Hump Day

June 11, 2008

For Texas music lovers or just freeloaders in general, Hills Cafe is the place to be on Wednesday night. It’s the free Texas music series with KVET–they usually broadcast the music live on their station. Too bad I missed Cory Morrow last week, he’s one of my favorites in the genre, but tonight Johnny Cooper is playing. He doesn’t have the look of a country singer with his curly long black hair but his music is pretty good.

[Johnny Cooper from Wichita Falls, TX]

Hills is on South Congress a couple blocks after Ben White, the music starts at 8 p.m., but it gets pretty busy so get there early.
